Let’s start off slow with just the summary. We’re in the middle of a story here, a complicated machination between Joseph, now second only to Pharoah in the occult land of Egypt, but perhaps #1.
Joseph entraps the youngest of his brothers, Benjamin, credibly accusing him of theft. Benjamin will have to stay behind in Egypt and the others can go free.
Judah intercedes on Benjamin’s behalf, and there is a deeper meaning in the interaction, especially when you consider that Judah was the one who saved Joseph’s life by convincing the brothers to sell him. (Gen. 37:26)
Think about the karma at work here. Judah saved Joseph, because he was a brother, and now Joseph is after Benjamin, and Judah is saving Benjamin, because he is a brother.
In any case, Judah has a way of talking to Joseph that makes it impossible for Joseph to conceal any longer his true identity. And so he tells his brothers the truth. But the brothers cannot really handle this. They are speechless.
All his life, Joseph was the different one. He was special – he was gifted – he could read dreams, and he was a brilliant planner.
His father Jacob loved him dearly.
But he could never get his brothers’ acceptance. No matter what. Joseph knows that a famine is coming, and he sends for the family. His father Jacob has to be reassured by God before he will go.
When Jacob shows up in Egypt and meets Pharoah, he tells the man that his days have been few and harsh. The Torah portion closes with Joseph turning the famine to Pharoah’s advantage. In a pattern that will repeat itself over the years, it is Pharoah who benefits from the people being reduced to slaves, but it is Joseph’s plan. And it is the Jews who are persecuted mercilessly.
A DEEP INSIGHT
Here is something very deep. Genesis 46:29. Joseph “APPEARED” to his father.
“And Joseph harnessed his chariot, and he went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and he appeared to him, and he fell on his neck, and he wept on his neck for a long time.” The Zohar (Kabbalah) tells us that the hint here is the words “harnessed his chariot.”
You could read this literally, or you could understand it spiritually – that Joseph rectified all aspects of his soul, and “met” his father in a different realm.

The concept of the chariot is the concept of the journey.
Rabbi Nachman of Breslov (a Jewish mystic who lived centuries ago) frequently pointed out the importance of physical travel as a method of rectifying the soul.
Wherever you go, you have to fix something. Rabbi Nachman always “illustrates the idea of spiritual growth as a journey, an ongoing process in which we are encouraged to honor each step we take.”
Right now, in the Torah, the Jews have to go down (they must descend into an occult place) so that they can go up (become purified and receive the Torah).
There are many questions to be asked as to why innocent people must be covered in filth to then be saved.
Rabbi Nachman often emphasized the tricky ways of the “yetzer hara” (evil inclination) as a manifestation of the “Samekh-Mem” (this is another way of referring to the evil one; we are not supposed to enunciate the name as it gives power).
In one particular story: “For such is the way [of the yetzer hara` (evil inclination): initially he incites a person, and when the person follows him, Heaven forbid, he himself taunts the person afterwards and takes vengeance on him for having listened.”

In my mind, a “sky event” refers to Biblical prophecy concerning the Messiah.

A person should not have to take a journey because journeys are dangerous.
A person should have to take a journey because the journey is the only way to really clean out their messy soul.
Joseph had to journey, and then the family had to journey, and the results were pain.
There is much more to say, but I kind of want to leave it there, just to emphasize….the point is not the future or the past. The point is the now.
The more you are aware of this fact, the more your worldly pain is elevated. The more you solve the problem before you begin.
