This past week’s Bible reading, “Mishpatim” (literally, “laws”) gives us an overview of the Jewish justice system.
Part of that system is to tell the truth no matter what: whether it’s popular or not; whether bad people want to bribe you into lying; and even whether a guilty person is poor and needs help.
Justice is a sacred requirement we bear.
On a deeper level, we learned in synagogue that this portion alludes to justice in the World to Come as well.
An individual can never escape the consequences of his actions, and if he or she is being treated unfairly now, they may be making restitution for prior actions in a way that only God understands.
Similarly, those who fail to administer justice impartially will not escape God’s scrutiny.
The truth is, only God knows what is right, and only God knows what is coming.
One thing is certain: He will do justice in the end.
