5780/5781 and Messianic Predictions: Follow-Up

Question:

“Are Messianic predictions about 5780 and 5781 based on something written in the Book of Daniel, and/or something else?”

Answer:

  • There is nothing in Daniel which specifically says “5781.”  Sometimes, very great rabbis say things and we do not know why they say them.
  • Also, predicting a time and date is not desirable for obvious reasons.
  • Keeping the above in mind, we do believe that Messiah must come by the year 6000. So we are within 220 years, a very short historical period. A prediction of this year or that year might be true or not true, but it doesn’t change the general trend.
  • One of the signs that Messiah is imminent is the ingathering of the exiles, which is happening now as Israel has been declared the Jewish state and Jewish people immigrate there.
  • There are also other signs which appear to fit the times we live in: “The young will shame the old,” “the passing of Biblical scholars,” “costly sustenance,” “sudden poverty,” “no government in Jerusalem” (Israel had multiple elections recently), “the face of a dog” (inadequate leaders), “waves of trouble” (COVID19 and other social ills), “haste” (no time to prepare), “forgetting the Bible,” and “when God exacts revenge.”
  • We believe in two messiahs“Moshiach ben Yosef” (which I believe is former President Trump – paves the way with world peace, facilitates the rebuilding of the Temple) and “Moshiach ben David” who unites us in turning to God – a religious savior.
